The Boston Red Sox will not trade pitcher Josh Beckett before Tuesday’s trading deadline, ESPNBoston.com’s Gordon Edes reported Monday night.
The team most interested in Beckett was the Texas Rangers, but with Beckett owed more than $36 million on the remainder of his contract, including $15.75 million each of the next two seasons, the Rangers apparently lost interest, according to the report.
Beckett is expected to make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Tigers.
The Red Sox also received inquires about outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, but the team does not plan to trade him either.
Finally, the Red Sox are no longer trying to trade outfielder Ryan Sweeney after he injured his right pinky finger by punching a dugout door in anger on Monday. The Red Sox had been trying to work out a deal with Cincinnati for Sweeney.
It means that, at this point, the Red Sox are not expected to make a major trade before the deadline.
