The San Diego Padres traded outfielder Seth Smith to the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Brandon Maurer on Tuesday, according to an ESPN report.

Smith, 32, is a perfect platoon-mate, hitting 12 homers, plus a .270 average in 2014 off right-handers.

He signed a two-year extension with the Padres in July, getting $6 million in 2015 and $6.75 million in 2016, with a club option worth $7 million for 2017.

Maurer, 24, had a 6.30 ERA in 2013 as a rookie, which was down to 4.65 in 2014 when he transitioned into a relief role in June. His bullpen ERA was 2.17.
