The Green Bay Packers and the agent for cornerback Sam Shields were in talks during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis over the weekend but no deal was struck.
Shields’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, met with team officials with hopes of agreeing on a contract before the cornerback becomes a free agent March 11, according to ESPN.com.
According to the report, the two sides will continue negotiating over the next few weeks.
Shields, 26, played under a restricted free-agent tender of $2.023 million last season. He tied a career high with four interceptions in 14 games.
General manager Ted Thompson did not say last week if the team would use the franchise tag on Shields if a deal is not reached. The deadline to tag players is March 3. The franchise designation for cornerback is expected to be about $11 million.
“I think Sam has been a good player for us, and he does a good job,” Thompson said last week. “And he’s one of the fellas we’d like to have back.”
