With injuries impacting the team early in training camp, the Redskins signed veteran offensive tackle Jordan Black to a one-year deal.
Coach Mike Shanahan also announced Tuesday that safety Tanard Jackson was activated from the physically unable to perform list. Jackson, sidelined by a calf injury, hopes to return to practice Wednesday.
“You are definitely behind when you miss any days of camp and you’re not out there practicing with the guys,” Jackson said. “But it’s a long time in the preseason. We’ve got plenty of opportunities to get out there.”
To make room for Black on the roster, linebacker Jonathan Goff was released.
Black was in training camp with the New Orleans Saints last summer but didn’t make the team and was out of football for the entire season. A right tackle by trade, Black will likely work exclusively at that position. Starter Jammal Brown (hip) isn’t practicing and has had chronic hip problems. Tyler Polumbus is practicing with the first team in his place.
Black, 32, has 40 career starts and last played for the Jaguars in 2010.
He was preparing to open some fitness franchises in the Houston area when he got the call from the Redskins.
“I still have football in me,” said Black, who will work to get closer to 290 pounds than his current 275-280. “This is probably the only scheme in the NFL that will allow an offensive lineman to be a little undersized.”
He will join the Redskins’ on-field practices later this week.
“My expectation is to expect nothing, hope for nothing, just to compete,” said Black.”
–Fullback Darrel Young remained sidelined by a strained left hamstring. The third-year player said he didn’t know if he would undergo an MRI, but did acknowledge it’s the same hamstring that kept him out of two games last season.
