Redskins elevate McVay to OC

The Washington Redskins announced Wednesday the promotion of former tight ends coach Sean McVay to offensive coordinator on new coach Jay Gruden’s staff.

The move was reported nearly a week ago and finally confirmed by the team.

The 27-year-old McVay worked with Gruden while both were on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers staff in 2008 and also with the Florida Tuskers of the UFL in 2009 when McVay was tight ends coach and Gruden the offensive coordinator.

McVay joined the Redskins in 2010 as an offensive assistant and for the past three seasons served as the tight ends coach.

The young assistant impressed the players with his knowledge of the offense.

“He had the highest understanding of an offense of any position coach I’ve ever been around,” former Redskins tight end Chris Cooley said, according to ESPN.com. “We’d go back and forth in meetings on scheme, why and how. There was always an answer. I love that in a coach. Two years ago, I said if anyone becomes a head coach on this staffm it would be Sean McVay.”

McVay played wide receiver at Miami (Ohio) University from 2004 to 2007 before beginning his coaching career.
