It looks as if Cincinnati Reds right-hander Nick Masset’s year is over before it ever started.
Masset, on the disabled list since spring training, was shut down again. The MRI on Masset’s right shoulder done over the weekend was the same as the last one he had.
“We’re treating the symptoms,” head trainer Paul Lessard said. “He has some generalized soreness. It’s not one specific spot.”
Massey pitched well in his rehab stint at Triple-A Louisville until his last outing — 6 2/3 innings, three hits, three runs, one walk, nine strikeouts.
But Tuesday, he faced six batters and retired none. He allowed four hits and walked two. Afterward, the new MRI was ordered.
“We’ll try to calm it down and get him stronger,” Lessard said.
The minor league season is down to a few days, so there is no opportunity for Masset to rehab. The Reds could activate him in September, but it’s unlikely he would pitch until the postseason seeds are decided.
Masset, 30, has a year remaining on his contract at $3.4 million.
