The Boston Red Sox are calling up their top prospect, shortstop Xander Bogaerts on Monday, according to Boston radio station 93.7 WEEI.

Bogaerts, 20, is batting .297 with a .388 on-base percentage this year combined between Class AA Portland and Class AAA Pawtucket.

He was ranked the No. 8 overall prospect by Baseball America before the season.

The Red Sox traded shortstop Jose Iglesias as part of the three-team deal that netted right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy from the Chicago White Sox in July. That could create an opportunity for Bogaerts to get some playing time behind starter Stephen Drew.

Bogaerts will become the first position player age 20 or younger to get called up by the Red Sox since Dwight Evans in 1972.

Boston starts a three game series at the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.
