Running back Adam Lane, who was the MVP in Florida’s Birmingham Bowl victory last season, was granted his release from the school, Gators officials announced Sunday.
Lane rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries in the bowl game win over East Carolina, but he totaled just 181 rushing yards for season.
Lane sat out several practices this past spring with an injury, and he seemed to fall out of favor with the new Gators staff, headed by head coach Jim McElwain.
Lane cited family issues as the reason he decided to transfer.
“Adam Lane has some family issues that he is dealing with and wants to be closer to home,” McElwain said in a statement. “As you’ve heard me say many times, family comes first in this program and we will grant him his release and we will do everything we can do to help him.”
Lane and Caleb Brantley were cited for a misdemeanor on July 4. They allegedly left a bowling alley without paying for their food.
Kelvin Taylor probably will be Florida’s starting running back after rushing for 565 yards in 2014.
