The Texas Rangers traded away some of their future to try to be a contender again in 2015.

The Rangers obtained right-handed starter Yovani Gallardo from the Milwaukee Brewers in a deal that sent three minor-leaguers to the Brewers, the Rangers announced Monday.

The Rangers gave up right-handed pitchers Corey Knebel and Marcos Diplan and shortstop Luis Sardinas.

What they got in return was the 28-year-old Gallardo, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, who went 8-11 with a 3.51 ERA for the Brewers last season. Gallardo has an 89-64 record in eight major-league seasons, and was an All-Star in 2010. He is durable, making at least 30 starts each of the past six seasons.

Gallardo is expected to be the No. 3 starter in a Rangers rotation that includes ace Yu Darvish and No. 2 starter Derek Holland. I

Gallardo will make $13 million in the final year of his contract in 2015. He would then become a free agent, but he seems agreeable to signing a long-term deal with the Rangers if things go well this season.

The Brewers will pay $4 million of Gallardo’s $13 million salary in 2015.

The Rangers’ disappointing 95-loss 2014 season had a lot to do with inconsistency in the starting pitching. Texas used 15 different starting pitchers last season.
