Texas Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar, who has experienced shoulder tendinitis, was cleared to throw by team physician Dr. Keith Meister, according to ESPNDallas.com.

However, the club plans to take it slow with Profar as a precaution.

General manager Jon Daniels said Profar will start spring training games in a few weeks as a designated hitter until he is fully healthy. He is expected to be ready for the regular season.

Profar, one of the top prospects in Major League Baseball, batted .234 with six home runs and 26 RBIs in 286 at-bats in a utility role last year after he was called up from the minors. He became the starting second baseman when Ian Kinsler was traded to the Detroit Tigers in the offseason.

Also, right-handed starting pitcher Derek Holland, who had microfracture surgery on his left knee, will not report to spring training for about two more weeks.
