The Los Angeles Rams released quarterback Nick Foles on Wednesday before veterans were due to report to training camp.
Foles, 27, had requested his release, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Rams reportedly tried to trade Foles but were unsuccessful.
Foles, who had skipped the Rams’ offseason workouts, was not pleased when the team traded up for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and selected quarterback Jared Goff.
Foles will now become an unrestricted free agent.
“We have been in contact with Nick and his representation throughout the offseason and we feel that this is the best decision for all parties involved,” Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said in a statement. “We appreciate the contributions that Nick has made to our organization in his time as a Ram and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Foles was acquired last offseason in the trade that sent Sam Bradford to the Philadelphia Eagles. After the trade, Foles signed a two-year, $24.5 million extension that included nearly $13.8 million in guarantees.
Foles started the first nine games with the Rams last season but was benched for Case Keenum after throwing only seven touchdowns with six interceptions and five fumbles during a 4-5 start.
Foles started all 11 games he appeared in during his lone season with the Rams, throwing for 2,052 yards and seven touchdowns with 10 interceptions, while completing 56.4 percent of his passes.
Foles went to the Pro Bowl in 2013 with the Eagles when he passed for 27 touchdowns with just two interceptions.
