Oakland Raiders wide receiver James Jones will be released to save the team $3.4 million against the 2015 salary cap.
Jones, 31, led the team in receptions last season with 73, including 31 on third downs, and was targeted a team-leader 112 times in 2014. The Raiders also let running back Darren McFadden, who led the team in rushing last season, leave in free agency.
Jones became expendable when the Raiders signed former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree as an unrestricted free agent and used the fourth overall pick on Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper.
Jones signed a three-year, $10 million deal in free agency to join the Raiders after
beginning his career with the Green Bay Packers.
