The Oakland Raiders, in search of a left tackle after free-agent Rodger Safford agreed to a contract and then failed a physical last week, landed Donald Penn on Tuesday.
According to multiple reports, Penn reached a contract agreement with the Raiders. He was released last week by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after seven years with the franchise.
Saffold returned to the St. Louis Rams after he did not pass the physical. If the deal with Penn goes through, he would replace Jared Veldheer, who left the Raiders as a free agent.
The 30-year-old Penn is expected to compete with Menelik Watson, a second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, for the Raiders’ starting job at left tackle.
The Buccaneers parted ways with Penn after signing tackle Anthony Collins. Penn had signed a six-year contract with Tampa Bay in 2010 and was scheduled to make $6.75 million in 2014.
In addition to Penn, the Raiders’ free-agent signings in the past week include wide receiver James Jones, linebacker LaMarr Woodley and defensive lineman Justin Tuck.
