Phillies sign former first-round pick

Minor-league infielder/outfielder Josh Fields has signed a minor-league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fields, a former first-round draft pick, spent last season with triple-A Las Vegas in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ organization. He hit .288 with 13 home runs.

As a rookie with the Chicago White Sox in 2007, he had 23 homers and 67 RBI in 100 games, but his production dropped off dramatically after that.

Fields, 29, has experience at the corners in the infield and outfield and likely will vie for a utility role with the Phillies in spring training.
