The Carolina Panthers brought cornerback Cortland Finnegan out of retirement for the stretch run, signing the veteran to their 53-man roster on Monday.
Finnegan, 31, announced he was retiring in March. He played for Miami last season, but has been out of the NFL since the Dolphins released him in the offseason.
Finnegan worked out Friday with the Panthers (11-0), who are expected to be without 34-year-old starter Charles Tillman for at least two more games as he recovers from a sprained knee.
Finnegan spent his first six seasons with the Tennessee Titans and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2008. After his final year in Tennessee in 2011, he spent two years with the St. Louis Rams before joining the Dolphins in 2014.
Finnegan’s career totals include 111 starts, 18 interceptions, 86 passes defensed and 645 tackles. He adds depth to a secondary that has been without Tillman for the past two games.
