Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters had an MRI on his sore right elbow Monday morning despite reporting that the swelling and soreness wasn’t as bad it had been last week. Results of the MRI had not been released as of Monday afternoon.
“He lost some of the soreness,” manager Buck Showalter told reporters. “The swelling is gone for the most part.”
Wieters complained of right elbow soreness and was removed from Saturday’s exhibition game against the Minnesota Twins after one inning.
During that one inning behind the plate, Wieters threw high on a stolen-base attempt by Minnesota’s Eduardo Nunez.
Manager Buck Showalter said X-rays were taken but no problem was revealed. On Sunday, Wieters received treatment and had more tests, which came back normal
An MRI also was scheduled for Monday morning.
The 29-year-old has played in only 101 games the past two seasons, but he played in more than 130 games in each from 2010 through 2013.
Wieters had Tommy John surgery in 2014.
