Buffalo Bills linebackers coach Jim O’Neil was named the new defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, the team announced Monday.
O’Neil was one of eight assistant coaches hired by new Browns head coach Mike Pettine, who has yet to hire an offensive coordinator.
This will be the first NFL coordinator’s job for O’Neil. He worked with the Bills outside linebackers last season under Pettine, who was the Bills defensive coordinator in 2013.
O’Neil also worked with Pettine while with the New York Jets from 2009 to 2012 in his first NFL coaching experience.
The Bills set a franchise record with 57 sacks, second-most in the NFL in 2013.
Pettine also retained Chris Tabor as the Browns’ special teams coordinator.
The Browns also named Brian Angelichio tight ends coach, Bobby Babich assistant secondary coach, Chuck Driesbach linebackers coach, Brian Fleury assistant linebackers coach, Jeff Hafley secondary coach and Shawn Mennenga assistant special teams coach.
