President Barack Obama spoke with Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III Saturday about playing safer, according to the Washington Times.
Griffin said that Obama talked to him about “protecting myself” during a conversation the two had at the Verizon Center. They were in attendance for Syracuse’s win over Marquette in the NCAA Tournament.
“Good conversation with @BarackObama Wise words, & much appreciated,” Griffin wrote via Twitter on Sunday.
Griffin is rehabbing a torn ACL he sustained in a playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Griffin hopes to be healthy enough for the start of the season.
“My knee is getting better every day. The doctors say I’m ahead of schedule,” Griffin said in a statement to ESPN last week. “My goal is to return healthy in Week 1 but if I’m not ready then I will wait until I am, however long that is. My first NFL season and my injury that ended it showed me a lot about the league, my team and myself.”
Dr. James Andrews, who performed Griffin’s surgery, told ESPN last week that the quarterback is ahead of schedule in his recovery.
Griffin’s father told The Washington Post on Monday that his son is expected to be cleared to run on a field by next week.
“He’s been running in the pool, and some on the treadmill,” Robert Griffin Jr. said. “But they’re just about ready to take it out on the field.”
