Notre Dame running back Tarean Folston, the team’s leading rusher last season, will be sidelined for the rest of this season after tearing the MCL in his right knee in Saturday’s game against Texas, coach Brian Kelly said Sunday.
Folston is scheduled to undergo surgery in the next 10 days, Kelly said.
Folston rushed for 889 yards and six touchdowns last season, and he had three carries for 19 yards in Saturday’s 38-3 victory over the Longhorns before leaving the game on the Irish’s second possession with a knee injury.
Redshirt junior C.J. Prosise and freshman Josh Adams had most of the carries after Folston left the game.
Prosise, a converted receiver, had 98 yards on 20 attempts, while Adams had five carries for 49 yards with two touchdowns.
The Irish had lost running back Greg Bryant for academic reasons over the summer.
Also, Irish safety Avery Sebastian, a graduate transfer from Cal, broke a bone in his foot on Saturday and will be out of action for four to six weeks.
