Daniel Jones, a starting cornerback for Northwestern, will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury he suffered in Saturday’s season-opening victory over Cal, head coach Pat Fitzgerald announced Monday.
The injury is believed to be a torn anterior-cruciate ligament, CollegeFootballTalk.com reported.
The news is less certain regarding the status of starting quarterback Kain Colter and starting running back Venric Mark.
Fitzgerald said both are day-to-day at this point.
Mark rushed for more than 1,300 yards last season, but he was limited to 29 yards in 11 carries against Cal. He has been bothered by a lower-extremity injury.
Colter suffered what was diagnosed as a concussion in the Wildcats’ first offensive series against Cal and sat out the rest of the game.
Trevor Siemian, who typically splits time with Colter at quarterback during games, presumably would become the starter if Colter cannot play in Saturday’s home game against Syracuse.
