With quarterback Tony Romo on the sideline, rookie quarterback Dak Prescott upstaged heralded first overall pick Jared Goff.
But Goff was also overshadowed by Sean Mannion, who led the Los Angeles Rams on a second-half comeback to defeat the Dallas Cowboys 28-24 in their first game after returning to California.
A crowd of 89,140, many of them Cowboys fans, made it the largest attendance in NFL history for a preseason game.
The Cowboys jolted the fans in attendance immediately when Lucky Whitehead returned the opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 Dallas lead after 13 seconds. Later in the quarter, fourth-round pick Prescott hit wide receiver Dez Bryant for a 10-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0.
Mannion, a third-round pick last year, completed 18 of 25 passes for 147 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter.
Seahawks 17, Chiefs 16
Trevone Boykin connected with Tanner McEvoy for a 37-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass with no time remaining and running back Troymaine Pope converted the two-point conversion as Seattle stunned host Kansas City.
It was quite a performance for Boykin, inserted back into the game late in the fourth quarter after Jake Heaps was pulled to get some playing time. Boykin, the undrafted rookie from TCU, led the team on the 88-yard scoring drive in four plays that used the final 67 seconds.
The Chiefs’ Alex Smith drove his offense 49 yards on eight plays with running back Spencer Ware scoring on a 1-yard run on the game’s first possession.
Titans 27, Chargers 10
Tennessee rushed for 288 yards en route to an exhibition victory over San Diego in Nashville, Tenn.
Offseason acquisition DeMarco Murray rolled up 93 yards in the first quarter, including a 71-yard touchdown run with 50 seconds left in the period that put the Titans ahead to stay at 10-7.
Second-round draft pick Derrick Henry was also impressive, playing in the second quarter and picking up 74 yards on 10 attempts, scoring on a 6-yard run up the middle with 8:21 remaining in the half that made it 17-7.
Colts 19, Bills 18
Stephen Morris’ 57-yard touchdown pass to Chester Rogers with 10:42 left put Indianapolis ahead of Buffalo for good in Orchard Park, N.Y.
Morris and starting quarterback Scott Tolzien combined to complete 17 of 32 passes for 244 yards and a score each as incumbent Andrew Luck sat out. Tolzien hit running back Jordan Todman for a 42-yard scoring strike with 1:50 remaining in the first half.
Bills starter Tyrod Taylor played just one series, completing 2 of 3 passes for 7 yards, before backup E.J. Manuel replaced him. Manuel was 10 of 18 for 91 yards, finding Chris Gragg for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 4:08 left in the first quarter for a 9-0 lead.
