Kansas City Chiefs running back Spencer Ware likely will need season-ending surgery after tearing the PCL in his right knee during Friday night’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said Ware also suffered additional damage to the knee.

Ware plans to seek a second opinion.

The 25-year-old Ware rushed for a team-high 921 yards last season.

–Standout Dallas Cowboys middle linebacker Anthony Hitchens sustained a tibial plateau fracture in his right knee and not a torn ACL as originally featured during Saturday night’s preseason contest against the Oakland Raiders.

The injury, reported by ESPN, is expected to sideline Hitchens for approximately eight weeks.

The 25-year-old Hitchens started every game for the Cowboys last season. He finished with 78 tackles last year and has 220 in his first three NFL seasons out of Iowa.

–The Cleveland Browns officially named rookie DeShone Kizer as the starting quarterback for the Sept. 10 season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The second-round pick out of Notre Dame earned a chance to solidify his spot atop the pecking order of passers for the Browns with a start in Cleveland’s preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night.

Kizer completed 6 of 18 passes for 93 yards against the Bucs. The Browns converted on five of their first seven third-down situations, but Kizer was intercepted after linebacker Lavonte David tipped a pass that was picked off by cornerback Vernon Hargreaves.

–The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets traded a pair of defensive backs.

The Eagles sent safety Terrence Brooks to the Jets in exchange for cornerback Dexter McDougle.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound McDougle, a third-round pick in 2014 out of Maryland, played in 20 games for the Jets primarily on special teams.

The 5-11, 200-pound Brooks owns 32 tackles, four pass defenses, one interception and two forced fumbles in 34 games (no starts) in three NFL seasons. He originally was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the third round of the 2014 draft out of Florida State.

–Chicago Bears wide receiver Cameron Meredith was carted off the field with a left knee injury suffered in the first quarter of Sunday’s preseason game against the Tennessee Titans.

Meredith, 24, sustained the injury when he was tackled low by Titans safety Johnathan Cyprien after a 16-yard reception.

The 6-foot-3, 207-pound Meredith led the Bears with 66 receptions for 888 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games last season. The third-year player missed part of the Bears’ offseason program after tearing ligaments in his thumb.

Bears long snapper Patrick Scales also left Sunday’s game with a knee injury. The team ruled him out for the rest of the game.

–The Houston Texans traveled to Dallas after Saturday night’s preseason loss in New Orleans because of the catastrophic flooding from Tropical Storm Harvey on the Houston area.

Coach Bill O’Brien said after the 13-0 loss to the Saints that the Texans would head to Dallas. It remains unclear if the Texans’ preseason finale on Thursday night against the Cowboys will be shifted from Houston to Dallas at AT&T Stadium.
