The Denver Broncos reportedly offered quarterback Brock Osweiler a three-year contract worth more than $45 million as the clock continues to count down toward the free agency deadline next week.
NFL sources told Mike Klis of KUSA of the deal on Saturday after the Denver Post reported the Broncos’ offer to Osweiler was more than $12 million a year.
According to the Denver Post, the Broncos have made a competitive offer likely to be more than Los Angeles Rams quarterback Nick Foles’ $12.27 million per season. The Broncos’ $45 million-plus package includes incentives, according to KUSA. Neither report indicated how much money is guaranteed in these offers to Osweiler, who is set to become a free agent on March 9.
Since the Broncos took home the Lombardi Trophy, the franchise has been in quarterback limbo. Peyton Manning is living up to his plan to soak in his second Super Bowl victory before deciding if he will retire, and team president John Elway has been affording him that time. The Broncos are expected to get an update on the future of Manning either Monday or Tuesday.
—Revenge could be the ultimate motivator for defensive end Mario Williams, who is scheduled to visit the Miami Dolphins five days after being released by AFC East rival Buffalo.
Williams, 31, had five sacks in 2015 and with two years left on his deal was released before he counted $19.9 million against the salary cap next season. Releasing Williams saves the Bills $12.9 million against the salary cap.
The Dolphins are in the midst of their own cap gymnastics. Linebacker Koa Misi restructured his contract this week and the Dolphins are likely to exercise a clause in the six-year, $114 million deal that defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh signed last March to gain another $12 million-plus in cap space. Pass rusher Cameron Wake has resisted a complete overhaul of his contract and, especially if Williams comes on board, is a strong candidate to be released.
—Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is planning to have a surgical procedure on his left collarbone next week, according to reports Friday.
Romo is scheduled to undergo a Mumford procedure, which involves shaving a portion of the clavicle to relieve pressure against the shoulder. Last week, Romo was said to be considering the insertion of a plate into the collarbone. But the results of a CT scan on Wednesday apparently made him change his mind.
The 35-year-old Romo is expected to be ready for Organized Team Activities in May after six to eight weeks of recovery.
—Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker signed his franchise tender.
The two sides still have until July 15 to reach agreement on a long-term deal. If no agreement is reached, Tucker will play the 2016 season under the franchise tag.
In four seasons with the Ravens, Tucker has made 130 of 148 field-goal attempts.
—Veteran kicker Josh Scobee announced on Facebook that he signed with the New Orleans Saints.
Assuming Scobee wins the job as the Saints kicker, he would be the 11th kicker used by New Orleans in 11 years under coach Sean Payton. Scobee was cut after playing four games for the Steelers last season. He made just six of 10 field-goal attempts in 2015.
He told Jacksonville.com he had injured his quad and hip flexor before that Ravens game, when he missed two field-goal attempts and was later released.
