NFL 2016 Season Analysis: Houston Texans

FACTS AND STATS
2015 Finish: First in AFC South
Record: 9-7, lost wild-card playoff
DIVISIONAL RECORD: 5-1

Total offense: 347.8 (19th)
Rushing: 108.2 (15th)
Passing: 239.6 (18th)
Total defense: 310.2 (3rd)
Rushing: 99.8 (10th)
Passing: 210.4 (3rd)

COACH: Bill O’Brien
3rd season as Texans/NFL head coach
18-15 overall; 0-1 postseason

XTRA FACTOR

–The Texans are regarded as a tough, resilient team that endured a lot of injuries in recent seasons. They head into this season with the heart of their defense — hell, the best defensive player in the league — bothered by injuries that seem to come more often. Had to imagine the Texans without J. J. Watt, but he is only human, right? After making it to the playoffs with no real starting quarterback, the Texans bought one in Brock Osweiler. The mood in the locker room is upbeat while realizing they are already competitive in their division and now look beyond. By the way, the next Super Bowl is in Houston, regardless.

NFL 2016 Season Analysis: Indianapolis Colts

FACTS AND STATS
2015 Finish: Second in AFC South
Record: 8-8
DIVISIONAL RECORD: 4-2

Total offense: 321.4 (28th)
Rushing: 89.9 (29th)
Passing: 231.5 (22nd)
Total defense: 379.1 (26th)

Passing: 257.1 (24th)

COACH: Chuck Pagano
5th season as Colts/NFL head coach
44-26 overall; 3-3 postseason

XTRA FACTOR

–Can the Colts get through a full season without losing key starters to serious injuries? Will Andrew Luck be able to return to form and be a productive quarterback for Indianapolis? If the answer is yes to both of those questions, the Colts have a real chance at returning to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus and could even make a lengthy post-season run. Another big key for Indianapolis, though, will be how quickly new defensive coordinator Ted Monachino can work his magic. The Colts must find a way to rush the passer with most of the same pieces in places from the 2015 season.

COACH: Gus Bradley

XTRA FACTOR

–The NFL did the Jaguars no favors with this year’s schedule. The Jags start the season facing four veteran quarterbacks — Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, Joe Flacco and Andrew Luck. The new defense will have to be ready from Day 1 to face this gauntlet.

COACH: Mike Mularkey

2-7 overall
4th full season as NFL head coach
18-39 overall

XTRA FACTOR
