Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth will start a rehab assignment on Thursday with Class A Potomac in the Carolina League.
Werth underwent surgery on Jan. 9 surgery to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder. He is expected to play a minimum of seven innings for Potomac in its game against Lynchburg.
The Nationals hope Werth can return to the majors early next week. Eligible to come off the disabled list on April 11, he said he’s aiming to rejoin the Nationals when they begin a road trip in Boston on Monday. Once Werth plays nine innings on back-to-back days, he will be cleared to return.
In 147 games for the Nationals last year, Werth batted .292 with 16 home runs and 82 RBIs.
