NEW YORK — Third baseman David Wright laced a tie-breaking ground-rule RBI double with two outs in the seventh inning as the New York Mets produced another comeback win by beating the Miami Marlins 4-3 at Citi Field on Monday.
With their season-high eighth straight win, the Mets (83-61) increased their lead in the National League East to 10 games while reducing the magic number for clinching the division to 10, pending the Washington Nationals’ game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Marlins (61-83) lost their second in a row and fell to 8-4 in September.
Six of the Mets’ last eight wins have been of the come-from-behind variety. On Monday, New York jumped out to a 1-0 lead on left fielder Yoenis Cespedes’ long homer in the third. However, Miami tied it on an RBI groundout by shortstop Miguel Rojas in the fifth and took the lead on back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth by left fielder Derek Dietrich and catcher J.T Realmuto.
Yankees 4, Rays 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Slade Heathcott hit a three-run homer to cap a ninth-inning rally by the New York Yankees as they beat Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field.
Heathcott, a defensive replacement in right field for Carlos Beltran, belted the first pitch he saw from Rays closer Brad Boxberger over the left-field wall. Pinch runner Chris Young and Brian McCann scored on the home run.
Boxberger entered the ninth with the Rays holding a 1-0 lead. After retiring the first two batters, he walked left fielder Brett Gardner and gave up an RBI double to designated hitter Alex Rodriguez to tie the game.
Orioles 2, Red Sox 0
BALTIMORE — Right-hander Kevin Gausman threw six innings of two-hit ball, leading Baltimore to a shutout victory over Boston.
The Orioles, who won for the fifth time in six games, still hold out hope for a late playoff push. The Red Sox, meanwhile, are trying to climb out of the American League East cellar.
Gausman (3-6) struck out seven and walked four to pick up his first win since Aug. 1. Catcher Caleb Joseph had three of Baltimore’s nine hits.
Indians 8, Royals 3
CLEVELAND — Carlos Carrasco struck out nine in six innings and Lonnie Chisenhall had three hits and three RBIs to lead Cleveland to a win over Kansas City at Progressive Field.
Carrasco (13-10) gave up one run on five hits to get the win. Right-hander Edinson Volquez (13-8), pitched five innings and took the loss, Kansas City’s 10th in its last 14 games.
Trailing 4-1, the Royals started to make noise when right-hander Carrasco started to run out of gas in the sixth inning. After striking out the first two batters of the sixth inning, Carrasco gave up a walk, a single and another walk to load the bases with two outs. But Carrasco retired designated hitter Kendrys Morales on a groundout to keep the score at 4-1.
