MLB Recaps: Syndergaard, Cabrera fuel Mets

NEW YORK — Noah Syndergaard pitched six sharp innings before exiting with a blister on his right middle finger and Asdrubal Cabrera collected three hits as the New York Mets scored six runs in the seventh inning of a 6-0 win over the Atlanta Braves Monday.

Syndergaard uncorked 92 mph sinkers, 94 mph sliders and 98 mph fastballs while allowing five outs. He struck out seven without issuing a walk and his next start was pushed back a day to Sunday against the Miami Marlins.

Cabrera had an RBI single and Lucas Duda hit a three-run double for the Mets.

Atlanta’s Julio Teharan allowed four hits in six innings while Freddie Freeman collected three hits.

Dodgers 14, Padres 3

LOS ANGELES — Joc Pederson hit a grand slam and drove in five runs as Los Angeles pounded San Diego.

Ace Clayton Kershaw allowed two runs and two hits in seven innings. He struck out eight without a walk in seven innings and is 5-0 in seven straight Opening Day starts.

Padres starter Jhoulys Chacin was tagged for nine runs and eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.

Nationals 4, Marlins 2

WASHINGTON — Adam Lind hit a two-run pinch hit home run with two outs in the seventh inning and Washington edged Miami.

Bryce Harper also homered while Daniel Murphy added an RBI single. Stephen Strasburg allowed two runs and six hits in seven inning innings.

Miami’s Edinson Volquez allowed four hits in five scoreless innings. Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna had run-scoring hits for the Marlins.

Phillies 4, Reds 3

CINCINNATI — Freddy Galvis and Cesar Hernandez homered as Philadelphia edged Cincinnati.

Howie Kendrick went 3-for-5 with a double as Philadelphia totaled seven extra-base hits. Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson allowed one run and six hits in five innings.

Scooter Gennett hit a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth for Cincinnati. Scott Feldman started for the Reds and allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Rockies 7, Brewers 5

MILWAUKEE — Mark Reynolds hit a two-run home run and doubled as Colorado beat Milwaukee.

Reynolds reached four times and drove in three runs for the Rockies, who erased a one-run deficit with two late errors by the Brewers and got four scoreless innings from their bullpen.

Jonathan Villar and Eric Thames had two-run doubles for Milwaukee.

Twins 7, Royals 1

MINNEAPOLIS — Ervin Santana pitched seven effective innings and Miguel Sano hit a solo homer as Minnesota scored six times in the seventh inning to beat Kansas City.

Santana (1-0) allowed just two hits and Jason Castro drove in two runs for Minnesota.

Mike Moustakas homered for the Royals. Starter Danny Duffy allowed one run and three hits in six innings.

Red Sox 5, Pirates 3

BOSTON — Rick Porcello struck out five in 6 1/3 sharp innings and Andrew Benintendi clubbed a three-run home run as Boston beat Pittsburgh.

Dustin Pedroia and Pablo Sandoval each had an RBIs and Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth for Boston.

Pittsburgh’s Gerrit Cole allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings. Josh Harrison, Jordy Mercer and Starling Marte drove in runs for the Pirates.

Orioles 3, Blue Jays 2 (11)

BALTIMORE — Mark Trumbo hit a solo homer off Jason Grilli with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Baltimore a victory over Toronto.

Trumbo crushed a 1-2 pitch into the left-field seats off Grilli (0-1), the sixth walk-off homer of the designated hitter’s career. Last year, Trumbo led the major leagues with 47 homers and Baltimore re-signed him to a new contract during the winter.

Tyler Wilson (1-0) got the victory after throwing a scoreless top of the 11th, thanks in part to a great play from third baseman Manny Machado, who made a diving stop of a Devon Travis shot near the bag. Machado then threw him out from his knees.

Tigers, White Sox (ppd.)

CHICAGO — The season opener between Detroit and Chicago was postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Jose Quintana will start for the White Sox on an extra of rest before his first career Opening Day start.

Justin Verlander will make his ninth Opening Day start in the past 10 seasons for Detroit.
