MLB Recaps: Marlins extend winning streak


PHILADELPHIA — Adeiny Hechavarria had three hits, and Marcell Ozuna and Justin Bour homered as the Miami Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 Monday night for their third consecutive victory.

Martin Prado and Christian Yelich each had two hits and an RBI for Miami, and every Marlins starting position player reached base at least once.

Ozuna, 1-for-5 in the game, extended his hitting streak to 16 games, matching a career high.

Odubel Herrera and Tyler Goeddel had three hits each for Philadelphia, which dropped its second straight.

Miami starter Adam Conley (3-2) went six innings, allowing one run on eight hits while striking out five and walking one. A.J. Ramos, the last of four Marlins pitchers, allowed a run in the ninth but earned his 12th save.

Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff (1-6) saw his personal losing streak reach five. He gave up three runs and six hits while striking out four and walking two.

Tigers 10, Twins 8

DETROIT — Nick Castellanos hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh as Detroit squandered an eight-run lead and then outlasted Minnesota at Comerica Park.

Castellanos had two hits and drove in two runs for the Tigers, who have won two straight after losing 11 of 12.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was ejected for arguing balls and strikes after the fourth inning by home plate umpire Doug Eddings. Ausmus pulled off his sweatshirt and placed it over home plate before leaving the field.

Ian Kinsler had three hits, including two extra-base hits during an eight-run first inning, scored two runs and drove in two more for Detroit. J.D. Martinez supplied three hits, including a homer, and knocked in two runs while Jose Iglesias added a three-run double.

Pirates 8, Braves 5

PITTSBURGH — Matt Joyce had a home run among his three hits and drove in three runs, Gregory Polanco had three hits and three runs scored and Jon Niese pitched six effective innings to lead Pittsburgh to a win over Atlanta.

Joyce stepped into the starting lineup and played right field as left fielder Starling Marte was placed on the paternity list before the game after his wife gave birth to a daughter in the morning. Polanco moved from right field to left to take Marte’s spot.

Joyce connected for his fifth home run, a two-run shot deep into the left-field bleachers, off Alexi Ogando in the seventh inning to increase the Pirates’ lead to 8-2.

Rays 13, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO — Curt Casali hit a three-run homer, Steve Pearce and Tim Beckham hit two-run shots, Desmond Jennings hit a solo blast and Tampa Bay defeated Toronto.

Jennings, Casali and Pearce each had three RBIs, and Steven Souza Jr. had three hits and one RBI for the Rays, who handed the Blue Jays their third straight loss in the opener of a three-game series.

Tampa Bay left-hander Drew Smyly (2-4) allowed four hits, four walks and one run while striking out six over five innings. The left-hander earned his first win since April 24.

Toronto left-hander J.A. Happ (5-1) allowed seven hits, one walk and eight runs in two-plus innings.

Indians 15, Reds 6

CLEVELAND — Home runs by Yan Gomes and Marlon Byrd in a five-run sixth inning rally helped power Cleveland to a win over Cincinnati at Progressive Field.

Trailing 4-0 after the top of the third, Cleveland scored 15 runs over the next six innings, unleashing a 19-hit assault on four Cincinnati pitchers.

Tommy Hunter (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to get the win. Reds starter John Lamb (0-1), who gave up seven runs on 10 hits in four innings, took the loss.

Red Sox-Royals postponed

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura will have to wait a day to try to slow down the potent Boston Red Sox bats.

The Red Sox-Royals game scheduled for Monday night at Kauffman Stadium was rained out and will be made up as a day-night doubleheader Wednesday. Ventura, who was scheduled to start Monday, has been pushed back to Tuesday.

Ventura is 3-2 with a 4.62 ERA in seven starts and has more walks (28) than strikeouts (26). He issued six walks in two starts this season and five in another.
