MLB notebook: Twins 3B Plouffe agrees to one-year deal


The Minnesota Twins and third baseman Trevor Plouffe agreed on a one-year, $7.25 million contract on Monday to avoid arbitration.

The settlement provides Plouffe with a raise of $2.45 million. He earned $4.8 million last season when he batted .244 with 22 homers and a career-high 86 RBIs.

Plouffe requested $7.9 million in arbitration and the Twins countered with $7 million.

—Houston Astros minor league pitching prospect Jose Rosario was killed in a motorcycle accident on Sunday night, the club confirmed.

Rosario was 20 years old. The crash happened in the Dominican Republic.

“It is with a heavy heart that we inform the Astros community of the passing of minor league pitcher Jose Rosario, who died last night in his native Dominican Republic,” general manager Jeff Luhnow said in a statement. “Our thoughts go out to Jose’s family, friends and many teammates.”

Rosario had been with the organization since being signed as a minor-league free agent in December 2013. He pitched in both the Dominican Summer League and the Gulf Coast League in 2015.

—The Texas Rangers and closer Shawn Tolleson agreed to a one-year, $3,275 million to avoid arbitration.

Tolleson, a right-hander, made $519,700 last season when he saved 35 games in 37 opportunities.

Tolleson requested $3.9 million in arbitration. The Rangers offered $2.6 million.

—The Los Angeles Angels claimed infielder Ronald Torreyes off waivers from the New York Yankees.

Torreyes, 23, played briefly for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, appearing in eight games with two hits in six at-bats. He played second and third in the majors but has played shortstop and left field in the minors.

The Dodgers traded Torreyes to the Yankees earlier this month.
