The St. Louis Cardinals signed free agent shortstop Ruben Tejada to a one-year deal on Saturday after he was released by the New York Mets this week.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal is worth $1.5 million, according to multiple reports.

Tejada, 26, was due $3 million by the Mets in 2016 before being released Wednesday after he cleared waivers. The Mets were responsible for only one-sixth of the $3 million salary.

The Cardinals needed another infielder after losing shortstop Jhonny Peralta to a thumb injury in a spring training game. Peralta underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb and will be out for a few months to start the season.

Tejada was batting .278 (5-for-18) with a home run, triple, double and five RBIs in eight spring training games before his release. Last season, Tejada batted .261 with three home runs, 23 doubles and 28 RBIs in 116 games for the Mets.

—The Washington Nationals plan to rest right-hander Bronson Arroyo before beginning rehab on his injured right shoulder, general manager Mike Rizzo announced.

The 39-year-old Arroyo will avoid any throwing or shoulder work for 10 to 14 days and then will begin a shoulder strengthening program followed by a throwing program.

Arroyo was told earlier this week his rotator cuff was “significantly torn” and he would either rehab the injury or retire. He underwent Tommy John elbow surgery and had his rotator cuff repaired during the summer of 2014 and was hoping to make a comeback. He has been experiencing pain this spring while trying to make the starting rotation.

Arroyo has a career mark of 145-131 with a 4.19 ERA. He has been a workhorse most of his career and topped 200 innings eight times between 2005 and 2013 and threw 199 innings in the other season.

—Detroit Tigers center fielder Cameron Maybin is expected to miss Opening Day while recovering from a fractured left wrist.

Manager Brad Ausmus said from spring training in Jupiter, Fla., that the organization received results of a second set of X-rays on Maybin’s wrist.

“It showed signs of healing, but he’s still not ready to do baseball activity,” Ausmus said.

Maybin sustained a hairline fracture of his left wrist on March 2 when he was hit by a pitch from Luis Severino of the New York Yankees in his first at-bat this spring training. The initial expectation was that Maybin would miss 4-6 weeks.

Last season, Maybin batted .267 with 10 home runs and 59 RBIs in 141 games for the Atlanta Braves. He was traded to the Tigers after the season.

—The Cleveland Indians optioned right-hander Shawn Armstrong to Triple-A Columbus, reducing their roster to 47 players.

—The New York Yankees optioned outfielder Ben Gamel to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and reassigned several other players to minor league camp.

Reassigned to the minor league camp were right-handers Tyler Cloyd, Mark Montgomery and Vinnie Pestano, left-hander Richard Bleier and infielders Jonathan Diaz and Donovan Solano.

—Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury left Saturday’s exhibition game against Atlanta after being hit by a pitch on the right wrist, but the Yankees reported later that X-rays and a CT scan came back negative.

The 32-year-old Ellsbury couldn’t get out of the way of a fastballfrom Julio Tehran in the fifth inning of the Yankees’ 3-2 victory in Tampa, Fla.

There was no timetable on Ellsbury’s return.
