New York Mets left-hander reliever Josh Edgin elected to undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2015 season.
Team doctor David Altchek will perform the procedure this week at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, general manager Sandy Alderson said Sunday.
The 28-year-old Edgin, who posted a 1.32 ERA in 47 appearances last season, had sought a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews before committing to the elbow surgery.
“It was the best decision for my future and my family,” Edgin said. “The Mets stood behind me 100 percent. I’m disappointed, because we have a heck of a team. My mindset is to be ready to go on Opening Day 2016.”
