NEW YORK — Another year, another no-hitter for the San Francisco Giants.
Rookie Chris Heston, making just his 13th career start, became the latest Giants pitcher to join the no-hitter club Tuesday night, when he struck out 11 New York Mets en route to a dominating 5-0 victory at Citi Field.
The no-hitter is the fourth by the Giants in the past four seasons and their fifth since 2009.
The 27-year-old Heston, who threw 72 of his 110 pitches for strikes, is the first rookie to throw a no-hitter since right-hander Clay Buchholz did it for the Boston Red Sox on Sept. 1, 2007.
The Mets’ only hard-hit ball against Heston came in the eighth, when third baseman Eric Campbell grounded into the hole in shortstop. Brandon Crawford made a nice backhanded stop and threw Campbell out by a couple steps as Heston pumped his fist.
Brewers 4, Pirates 1
PITTSBURGH — Taylor Jungmann pitched one-run ball over seven innings to win his major league debut and fellow rookie Jason Rogers had two hits, including a home run and two RBIs as Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh.
Jungmann checked the Pirates on just three hits while striking out five and walking one. He was the Brewers’ first-round draft pick in 2011 from the University of Texas.
Rogers, playing first base in place of Adam Lind against a left-handed starting pitcher, hit his second homer of the season in the top of the first inning to open the scoring. He and shortstop Jean Segura each had two hits for the Brewers.
Blue Jays 4, Marlins 3
TORONTO — Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and Toronto defeated Miami.
The one-out blast to center on the first pitch against A.J. Ramos extended the Blue Jays’ winning streak to a season-best seven games.
The Blue Jays overcame two home runs by Miami Giancarlo Stanton and a solo homer by Christian Yelich.
Tigers 6, Cubs 0
DETROIT — Anibal Sanchez tossed 7 2/3 shutout innings and Detroit backed him with 13 hits in a victory over Chicago at Comerica Park.
Sanchez scattered six hits and struck out seven to record his first win since May 14. He was aided by his outfield defense, as center fielder Rajai Davis made a home-run saving catch and left fielder Yoenis Cespedes threw out a runner at home.
Davis also had two extra-base hits and scored twice for the Tigers (31-28), who have won three straight.
Reds 11, Phillies 2
CINCINNATI — Joey Votto homered three times on three pitches, shortstop Zack Cozart hit a three-run bomb and third baseman Todd Frazier added a solo shot, lifting Cincinnati over Philadelphia at Great American Ball Park.
Votto, who now has 13 homers this season, homered on Aaron Harang’s first pitch leading off the third inning and again off the former Red with one out in the fifth.
In the seventh, Votto homered on the first offering from Dustin McGowan to join Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench as the only Reds players to hit three homers in a game three times in their career.
Angels 8, Rays 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Albert Pujols hit his 536th career home run, matching Mickey Mantle on baseball’s career list and Los Angeles defeated Tampa Bay to snap a five-game losing streak.
The Angels also got a double from Pujols and six-plus solid innings from starter Matt Shoemaker, who retired the first 11 Rays he faced.
Los Angeles got a career-high four RBIs from Kole Calhoun, who went 3-for-5, and the top four hitters in the Angels lineup went a combined 11-for-19.
Mariners 3, Indians 2
CLEVELAND _ Robinson Cano had two doubles and an RBI and Roenis Elias pitched six strong innings as Seattle beat Cleveland at Progressive Field.
Elias got the win. Cy Young winner Corey Kluber fell to 3-7. Carson Smith pitched the ninth to pick up his second save.
Yan Gomes belted two solo home runs to account for Cleveland’s runs.
Orioles 1, Red Sox 0
BALTIMORE — Steve Pearce scored on a wild pitch from Boston right-hander Matt Barnes in the seventh inning to give Baltimore the win.
Barnes entered after Eduardo Rodriguez blanked the Orioles for six innings. Pearce greeted Barnes with a leadoff double off the wall in right and went to third when shortstop J.J. Hardy followed with a soft single to center.
Baltimore starter Miguel Gonzalez left the game in in the fifth after injuring his groin.
