New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, had a scheduled throwing session pushed back, according to the New York Daily News.

Harvey had the surgery eight months ago and was set to throw off a mound on Tuesday. However, the team decided to postpone the session as a precaution.

“He’s fine,” a source told the Daily News. “It’s nothing physical, it’s just a plan to be more cautious. If something happens to him, that would just be a huge blow. We just want him to take it a little slower. Nobody wants him to be less competitive, we just want to be cautious.”

Harvey, 25, had Tommy John surgery last October and has been on a throwing program in hopes of returning at some point this season. However, after consulting with surgeon Dr. James Andrews, the team decided to slow down Harvey’s process so he can be ready for Opening Day of next year.

Harvey went 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 178 1/3 innings in 2013 before the injury. He also started last year’s All-Star Game in New York.
