New York Mets third baseman David Wright, who hasn’t played in a week due to a herniated disk in his neck, was placed on the disabled list Friday and may be out 6-8 weeks.

Wright received an anti-inflammatory shot in his neck this week and apparently didn’t show sufficient improvement in his condition Thursday, leading to the decision to take him off the roster.

The Mets made the announcement about their captain: “Mets third baseman David Wright has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 30 with a herniated disk in his neck. The injury will require six-to-eight weeks of rest from baseball activities during which David will undergo appropriate physiotherapy to protect the area. After the rest period, David will resume baseball activity.”

Wright was absent for 124 games last season due to a hamstring injury that was eventually diagnosed as spinal stenosis, a condition he will have to manage for the rest of his career. He has missed 15 of the Mets’ first 52 games this year.

The stint on the disabled list is Wright’s fourth since 2011. In addition, he missed 28 games but never went on the disabled list in 2014 due to a sore left shoulder.

Wright, 33, is hitting .226 with a .350 on-base percentage, a .438 slugging percentage, seven home runs and 14 RBIs this year. After topping 20 homers and 90 RBIs six times from 2005-12, he hasn’t approached his previous power numbers in recent years.

The Mets recalled infielder Matt Reynolds, who was scheduled to be in uniform for Friday night’s game in Miami.
