Baker Mayfield, who transferred from Texas Tech after the 2013 season, was named Oklahoma’s starting quarterback for the Sept. 5 opener against Akron, Oklahoma announced Monday.
Mayfield beat out last season’s starting quarterback, Trevor Knight, for the starting job.
“It’s been a very tight battle among those three guys,” coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. “Baker, Trevor and Cody (Thomas) have all made substantial progress, and I feel we can win with any of them.”
Mayfield was a walk-on at Texas Tech in 2013 but earned the starting job with the Red Raiders as a freshman and was named Big 12 freshman of the year. Mayfield left the Texas Tech program after the 2013 season and enrolled at Oklahoma in the spring.
At Oklahoma, Mayfield will run the offense installed by new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley. The fast-paced attack will resemble the spread offense used at Texas Tech.
Oklahoma is ranked No. 19 in the Associated Press preseason poll.
