On the same day the Boston Red Sox filled his former position, free agent catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia agreed to a three-year, $21 million deal to join the Miami Marlins.

Multiple media outlets reported the agreement Tuesday, though the contract was not finalized.

Earlier Tuesday, the Red Sox reached a one-year, $8.25 million deal with free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski.

Saltalamacchia, 28, belly-flopped into free agency, going 6-for-32 with 19 strikeouts in the postseason and getting benched for the final three games of the World Series.

He was a solid performer in helping Boston get to the Fall Classic, however, batting a career-high .273 with 14 homers and 65 RBIs in 121 regular-season games. Saltalamacchia threw out 21 percent of attempted base-stealers.

The move represents a homecoming for Saltalamacchia, who was born in West Palm Beach, Fla., and went to high school in the area.

Saltalamacchia’s arrival represents a major offensive upgrade for Miami behind the plate. Marlins catchers — primarily Jeff Mathis and Rob Brantly — hit a combined .194 with a .249 on-base percentage, a .280 slugging percentage, nine homers and 51 RBIs last season.
