The Seattle Mariners finalized a deal with Cuban outfielder Guillermo Heredia on Tuesday.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed by the team.
The Mariners placed catcher Jesus Sucre on the 60-day disabled list to create room on the 40-man roster for for Heredia, who is in training camp with the team.
Heredia has been out of competitive baseball since 2014. The 25-year-old defected to the United States early last year.
Before coming to America, Heredia batted .285 with 23 home runs and 121 RBIs in 374 games spanning six seasons with Matanzas in the Serie Nacional Cuban League.
Sucre is recovering from surgery on his right ankle in January after he fractured his right ribula in Venezuela during winter ball. Last season with the Mariners, he batted .157 with one home run and seven RBIs in 50 games.
The 27-year-old Sucre has one homer and 15 RBIs in 79 career games in portions of three major league seasons.
