The Seattle Mariners announced Monday that Trent Jewett was added to new manager Lloyd McClendon’s coaching staff.

Jewett, the first one hired to McClendon’s staff, will serve as bench coach.

Jewett spent the last three seasons with the Washington Nationals. He started in 2011 as first base coach before moving over to third base this year.

Before joining the Nationals, Jewett, 49, spent his entire baseball career as a player and coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He was the Pirates’ third-base coach in 2001 and ’02 when McClendon was Pittsburgh’s manager.
