Mariners claim C Brantly on waivers

The Seattle Mariners claimed catcher Rob Brantly on waivers from the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, general manager Jerry DiPito announced.

To make room for Brantly on the Mariners’ 40-man roster, right-hander Ryan Cook was placed on the 60-day disabled list because of a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle.

Brantly, 26, sustained a broken left thumb in spring training last year, and opened the season on the disabled list. He returned on May 28, and appeared in 30 games with AA Birmingham and 23 games with AAA Charlotte, batting a combined .310 in the minors with eight home runs and 38 RBIs before appearing in 14 games for the White Sox in September.

Cook, 28, appeared in one game this spring, pitching a shutout inning vs. San Diego on March 2 before being injured.

In his first four major league seasons, Cook posted a 2.77 ERA in 208 relief appearances, but had an 18.69 ERA in nine relief appearances for Oakland and Boston last season.
