Leyland returns to Tigers

Jim Leyland will return for an eighth season as the Detroit Tigers manager, the team announced Tuesday.

Leyland’s coaching staff has also has been invited to return.

The 2013 season will be Leyland’s 22nd as a major league manager. His career began in 1986 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He won the World Series in 1997 while helming the Florida Marlins, and also managed the Colorado Rockies for a season.

He has taken two Tigers teams to the Series, but lost both times, including being swept by San Francisco Giants.

Leyland, 67, leads active managers with 1,676 wins.
