Derek Jeter did his part to help a shaken community.

The New York Yankees shortstop phoned the mother of Sandy Hook Elementary School teacher Victoria Soto, who was killed protecting her first-grade students during last Friday’s Newtown tragedy, according to an ESPN.com report.

Donna Soto received a call Wednesday, the same day as the funeral. Carlee Soto, Victoria’s sister, tweeted the news.

“Derek Jeter just called my mom!!!!! Thanks Vicki, she needs it thank you @yankees this meant a lot to my mother and all of us,” the tweet read.

Soto’s cousin, James Wiltsie, told the New York Daily News that Soto was a big Yankees fan.

Victoria Soto died Friday as she tried to deflect bullets from gunmen Adam Lanza. She was 27.

“Nothing is going to fix the fact that [Donna] had to bury her daughter today,” Wiltsie told the Daily News. “But I’m happy that it brought some comfort. … People like Jeter have reached out. It brings some comfort to know that people recognize Vicki as a hero.”
