SAN DIEGO — Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Ramon Ortiz made a painful return to the majors Sunday.
The 40-year-old veteran left his spot start against the San Diego Padres with no outs in the third inning after apparently injuring his right elbow.
Ortiz was outrighted to the minor leagues Friday, then promoted Saturday from Triple-A Buffalo to start Sunday in place of Brandon Morrow, who is out due to a forearm injury.
Ortiz, who allowed four runs in two-plus innings, appeared to get hurt while delivering a pitch. His left knee buckled when it planted, but Ortiz immediately grabbed his right elbow and threw his glove down in frustration.
Details of the injury were not disclosed during the game.
Ortiz left the field in tears and was replaced by Brad Lincoln, who pitched two scoreless innings and left with the game tied 4-4.
