Indians promote 1B/OF Sands

The Cleveland Indians promoted first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands from Columbus on Friday and optioned right-handed reliever Austin Adams to the Triple-A club.

The Indians also transferred right-hander Josh Tomlin from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. He underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday and is expected to need 12-16 weeks to rehab.

Sands, 27, spent the entire exhibition season in major league camp with Cleveland, hitting .304 (14-for-46) with a double, two home runs and seven RBIs in 22 games. He appeared in 10 games at first base, seven games in right field and two games in left field.

Sands was signed as a free agent by the Indians to a minor league contract in December and invited to camp as a non-roster player. He is a veteran of 82 major league games across three seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays.
