Forward Ed Davis became an unrestricted free agent Tuesday when the Memphis Grizzlies decided against making him a qualifying offer.
The 6-foot-10 Davis joined the Grizzlies after a trade with the Toronto Raptors in January 2013. In 99 career games with Memphis, he averaged 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds.
A first-round draft pick in 2010, Davis has career averages of 6.9 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 54.2 percent from the field in 275 games, including 58 starts, with Toronto and Memphis.
“Ed has many years in front of him in the NBA and there’s no doubt he can have a long and productive career,” Grizzlies interim general manager Chris Wallace said. “However, in light of the re-signing of Zach Randolph, the continued development of Jon Leuer and the addition of Tennessee native Jarnell Stokes (in the 2014 NBA Draft), it’s in our best interest to keep our options open.”
Randolph is a two-time All-Star who recently agreed to a contract extension through the 2016-17 season.
“Zach has obviously become a cornerstone of our franchise in the time he’s been in Memphis, and his contributions have been immense not just on the court but in the community,” Wallace said. “Through the process, he’s become one of the most popular Grizzlies in the history of the franchise dating back to the Vancouver days.
“We look forward to teaming with Zach to take a run at reaching our ultimate goal, which is an NBA championship.”
