Richard Sherman’s tirade following the NFC Championship Game didn’t sit well with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
In a Thursday interview with “CBS This Morning,” Goodell criticized the remarks made by the Seattle Seahawks cornerback, who verbally tore into San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree moments after making the decisive play in the end zone Sunday.
“No, I’m not cheering for that,” Goodell said. “He is such a great young man. He is extremely well-spoken, does great things off the field, obviously a great player on the field. I want him to present himself in the best possible way and make sure that he is reflecting on himself and his family in a positive way.”
Goodell added that Sherman’s diatribe detracted from what should have been a celebratory moment, the Seahawks holding off the 49ers for a 23-17 win that sent Seattle to its second Super Bowl.
The commissioner acknowledged Sherman’s subsequent apology for his remarks.
“He took away a little bit from the team, that’s what he said (Wednesday), and I think that was a very interesting comment and I think that was fair,” Goodell said.
