San Francisco right-hander Matt Cain will miss his first start of the season with a flexor tendon strain.

Cain had an MRI on Monday that revealed there was no ligament damage in his right forearm.

After Monday’s 5-4 Opening Day win against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said “it was iffy” if Cain would make Wednesday’s start against the Diamondbacks. But later in the evening, Bochy said it is likely that Cain will be headed to the disabled list.

The problem is “more like a two-week thing,” Bochy said.

Right-hander Tim Lincecum could get the start in Cain’s place.

Cain complained of tightness in his forearm after throwing four innings in his final spring tune-up on Friday.
