SAN FRANCISCO — Giants manager Bruce Bochy took an unusual approach to planning ahead Thursday. He planned way ahead.
With injured starting pitchers Matt Cain (strained flexor tendon in right arm) and Jake Peavy (strained back) both expected to be healthy enough to return to the starting rotation in the first week of July, Bochy got together with members of his staff Thursday and laid out his tentative plans.
The proposal:
–Move Cain into Tim Hudson’s spot in the rotation for the July 2 game at Miami, sending Hudson to the disabled list for a stint that would serve mostly as an in-season vacation.
–Move Peavy into Tim Lincecum’s spot in the rotation for the July 3 game at Washington, with the former two-time Cy Young Award winner going to the bullpen.
World Series hero Madison Bumgarner and right-handers Ryan Vogelsong and Chris Heston would retain their spots in the rotation.
The tentative plan hinges on Cain and Peavy getting through final injury-rehab starts at Triple-A this week unscathed.
