SAN FRANCISCO — Giants fans came to cheer the enemy and boo the new guy Thursday night, although they never got a chance to do the latter.
No doubt, new San Francisco third baseman Casey McGehee can’t wait until the scenario is reversed next month in Miami.
While McGehee, the former Marlins standout, was relegated to watching Thursday’s game from the San Francisco bench, first-year Miami first baseman Michael Morse got a standing ovation from his old fans in San Francisco when he was presented his 2014 World Series championship ring before the game.
Video highlights of Morse’s contribution to the title run were shown on the scoreboard in center field, including his pinch-hit home run that tied Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The well-liked Morse was mobbed by former teammates and coaches at home plate shortly after receiving the ring. The fans gave him a standing ovation during the ceremony.
Suffice it to say, McGehee’s highlight clip as a Giant would be much shorter. He is hitting just .178 for his new employer and was never summoned from the bench in a 7-2 blowout loss to his old mates. Morse went 2-for-4.
