Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is going with experience at quarterback in the season-opener against No. 22 North Carolina.

The Bulldogs and Tar Heels meet in Atlanta in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff at the Georgia Dome.

Fifth-year senior Greyson Lambert won the job over highly touted freshman Jacob Eason.

Lambert started 12 games but struggled against quality competition last season. Smart was aware that the Georgia faithful are eager to see Eason, who was one of the top pro-style quarterback recruits in the 2016 recruiting class.

Lambert had a three-year stint at Virginia and then transferred to Georgia as a graduate. He was 10-2 in 12 starts last season with 1,959 yards passing, 12 touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Bulldogs haven’t started a freshman since Matthew Stafford in 2006, when he got the job three weeks into the season. Quincy Carter in 1998 was the last freshman to start in an opener.

Smart said Eason could still play in the game.
