Heisman Trophy and BCS national championship winner Jameis Winston of Florida State took a swing at playing against the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

Winston, also a member of the Seminoles baseball team, hit a broken-bat groundout to second base against right-hander Shane Greene at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., in the sixth inning and struck out looking against Bryan Mitchell in the eighth inning of the Yankees’ first spring training game.

The quarterback, who is also Florida State’s closer, came into the game as a fifth-inning defensive replacement. He also is a relief pitcher.

Winston has said that the Yankees are his favorite team. Before the game, he was pictured with Yankees greats Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada.

Winston is hoping to play both football and baseball professionally.

“It will be fun to watch,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said earlier. “Obviously, he’s extremely athletic when you watch him play the game of football. He’s got a great arm. Pretty mature for his age.”

Winston has pitched four scoreless innings with three strikeouts so far this season for Florida State, which was 6-0 entering the game against the Yankees. In January, he led the Seminoles to a 34-31 win over Auburn in the BCS title game.
